...Valarie!
Congratulations! Random.org selected Valarie as the winner of Heaven Sent Food and Fiber's Tea Tree Mint and Oatmeal Soap.
Thanks for all who entered and shared your desires to learn back-to-basics survival skills. I, for one, would like to learn to quilt so that I can transform all these memory-filled, past-their-prime t-shirts into works of art. Quilting bee, anyone?
Lastly, many of you asked for a reminder on how to support small farms and Heaven Sent Food and Fiber. So, here's a note from Coleen:
Since you are signing up through the computer would you vote for our Dream Big Contest Idea? We are competing to win a $5,000 grant to purchase equipment for making socks from our yarns. This is one “warm step” closer to our dream of bringing a small fiber mill to Tahlequah to create agriculture-related jobs and more options for farmers and ranchers. Go here to vote for our Dream! Share it on your page to have friends and relatives vote too.
Voting opened today!

Giving Thanks With Thoughtful Giving: Trigeminal Neuralgia
Meet the Mitchells.
Jesse and I met in kindergarten. (I'll spare you the elementary school stories because Jesse is tired of hearing them.) Alecia and I met in middle school where she proved her ability to play the flute, while I learned my lips were the wrong shape for the instrument. So, in high school, they were both drum majors while I used my big mouth to cheer for our teams.
![]() |
Photo snapped in between Jesse's happy smiles, but Alecia provided hers!
|
I still remember their wedding day in our home church: Alecia's red hair vibrant beneath her white veil. Jesse's trademark grin larger than normal. Me realizing we were all grown up.
Even now, when I think of them, I see Alecia's red hair and Jesse's smile; I feel their joy and kindness; and I hear music.
They're the friends I may not have hung out with all the time, but when I did, I wanted to be my best self. Still do. They're the kind of friends that before doing something questionable, I wonder what they'd think about it. Not because they're judgmental, but because they're nice, good people and I'd hate to disappoint them.
Because Jesse and Alecia believe in the good of mankind, they often find it.
Jesse said recently, "I've been married to Alecia for 16 years (17 in December) and have had 19 surgeries in that span. I apologized once to her for all of this being my fault, that I'm sure she never thought of her life turning out like this. She just told me, 'I said I married you for BETTER or WORSE. This is just the worse part. It WILL get better.'"
Jesse has Trigeminal Neuralgia. It's often called "the suicide disease" because it is so agonizing that many prefer suicide to living in fear of pain's power. A small breeze, a baby's touch, or even a smile can provoke an unfathomable jolt of pain.
Jesse explains it best:
"I try so hard to not be discouraged, to keep trusting that He will provide. He has thus far. Man, have we ever been a part of some wonderful blessings and miracles.... It's getting easier to let go and for me to quit trying to be "the one in charge," because this life isn't mine. It's HIS. I try to remain positive and try to help others who become sick and feel the way I have.
This disease, Trigeminal Neuralgia (where a blood vessel or artery wraps around a portion of the Trigeminal Nerve, rubbing away the protective sheath surrounding the nerve, causing intense pain each time the vessel pulses or moves), takes away so much of who the person once was.
![]() |
removing stitches |
I've had two brain surgeries to treat this disease. I had the first, a MicroVascular Decompression, in September 2009. Eight months after that surgery took place, it failed. I had a second brain surgery in June 2010 to sever the sensory portion of the nerve.
You almost live in a cocoon, a sort of hermit, scared to death that another 'attack' will hit at any time. These attacks have been described as feeling like being struck in the head by a lightning bolt, stabbed by an ice pick, struck in the head by a cattle prod, or biting onto a live, active electric wire. Through research, actual case studies and surgeries that have taken place recently among those like me who have had the sensory portion of the Trigeminal Nerve severed, we now know that those sensory fibers can in fact regenerate and reconnect to each other, causing that pain to resurface.
Unfortunately, exactly that has happened, and I'll have a third brain surgery to cut the entire Motor Cortex and Sensory portion of the nerve, resulting in what looks like a stroke-type of condition on my face; whereby, I will have no ability to smile, no ability to chew or to open my mouth, but I'll take that over pain like this any day."

badge of courage |
Not only does Jesse have Trigeminal Neuralgia, but he's also been plagued with horrific sinus surgeries and complications--which resulted in MRSA, numerous PICC lines, and carrying an oxygen machine with him.
![]() |
Jesse posing with one of his many PICC lines |
The Mitchells are good, hard-working citizens. When do they get a break? I've spent so much time being angry for them.
Yet, they express gratitude, focus on blessings, and inspire many.
Through his pain--in spite of his health--Jesse encourages fellow TN sufferers and families, inspires friends and strangers, uses Facebook for the power of good, supports his children in school activities, cheers fanatically for sports teams, etc.
And one must ask why. Why has this happened? Are these illnesses connected? Does Jesse have bad genetic luck or is there something more?
When will things get better?
Here's where we come in.
The Mitchell family has an opportunity to go to the Mayo Cinic in Minnesota to meet with Jesse's dream doctor. Someone gave them plane tickets. They feel this is their chance to get it right. To learn why he's had so many complications. To have an answer so he--and his family--can heal.
"Though my family and I have struggled mightily all along, I've never given up HOPE. If you give up hope--h-o-p-e--then you have nothing. It's my daily goal to give at least one person a semblance of HOPE, to let them know that there is an end to what they're going through."
When I asked permission to tell their story, Alecia said that she was honored that I would share their stories and loves that their story shows the goodness of others.
See? Good people.
Another drastic surgery must be intimidating. If the world has to continue without Jesse's smile, so be it. Because their goodness will still be here. We need more of that.
I often want to help people, but don't want to give money to an organization that will spend it on postage stamps or CEO salaries. If you prefer a direct approach as well, please donate to Jesse and Alecia's family here. During this month of giving thanks, please consider thoughtful giving.
Most of all, please keep them in your thoughts and prayers the week of November 18.

And just for funsies...

Friday Favorite: Wailani's Body Scrubs
If you've ever spent any time with me, I've probably told you about a product or place I love. Sharing my favorite things is one of my favorite things.
Want to know one of my new favorite things? Wailani's Body Scrub
Here's why:
1. The scents are inspired by Hawaii. If I close my eyes and breathe deeply, it's like a mini vacation in the shower...as long as my kids stay out of the bathroom.
2. The ingredients are all natural and pronounceable. Read: I don't freak I'm poisoning myself for smooth skin. No fear abides in this girl for coconut oil or Kona coffee or organic flower petals.
3. It's not super oily. Some scrubs I've purchased use ingredients that are next to impossible to remove so that if I forget to put my contacts in before I shower (seriously, who does that?), I spend the day peering through lenses damaged from an oil slick.
4. Lisa Czlonka, the founder, is a friend of mine who lives in Oklahoma and brought her childhood in Hawaii with her. Clearly, she likes sharing what she loves with others, too. I like to buy from "mom and pop" businesses, maybe because one puts food on my own table or maybe because it just seems like the right thing to do. Small business owners are in close contact with what goes into a product and how their clients feel about it. That matters to me.
5. It's a great gift. I'm not a great gift giver, but I play one on Pinterest. My mind keeps coming up with different gift baskets.
Kona Coffee. I am not a coffee drinker. This scrub is the closest I will ever get to the coffee craze. Maybe it's the smell or the intense scrub, but I am alert and ready for the day after having my morning Kona Coffee in the shower. Unlike me, my husband loves coffee. So, I shouldn't have been surprised when he absconded it for his own use. Gift idea: Pair it with a gift certificate to a local coffee shop and some chocolate covered coffee beans to make any coffee lover--male or female--jittery with joy (and a little caffeine).
Golden Pineapple. Citrus smells make me happy. This scrub is like opening the window to morning sunshine. It has a smaller grain than the Kona Coffee so keep that in mind when you consider your preferences. I'm glad to have both. I like using the pineapple on my legs because my skin is more sensitive, and I like using the Kona Coffee for my elbows and feet. Gift idea: The pineapple is often a symbol for hospitality, so the Golden Pineapple body scrub would be a nice leave-behind after being an overnight guest. For a new homeowner, pair it with bath towels.
Salty Hibiscus. Wow. Just wow. I'm extremely picky about floral scents, and I adore this scrub. I wish Salty Hibiscus came in a lotion and a candle and a laundry detergent and.... The smell is not overpowering, but it is distinctly relaxing and feminine. Plus, the scrub is a pretty pink and contains actual organic flower petals. Gift idea: A lovely gift for a girly girl would be Salty Hibiscus and a gift certificate for a mani-pedi or massage. In the spirit of Hawaii, why not toss in a bikini? Yes, I'm serious. Your favorite gardener might appreciate it paired with an actual hibiscus and gardening gloves.
Warning: You'll love being indulgent so much that you might get selfish. Case in point: Lisa gave me the coffee one. Then I bought the last two with the intention of giving them away, but used them for myself instead. This works in your favor because some lucky reader will get to select a scrub of his or her choice.
Yep. I'm giving one away.
Want a mini vacation? Here's how you can win one of Wailani's Body Scrubs in three easy steps.

The Getaway
On Mother's Day, I received flowers and an envelope. I nervously slid my finger under the flap because I expected to see flight and hotel information for the SCBWI LA conference.
Don't get me wrong: I'm not oblivious to the generosity! Garrett had pressured me to attend since I told him it was supposed to be a great conference--even better than the NY one I attended a few years ago.
When I told him I needed to finish some details on my book before it was ready to pitch, he insisted...until I compared it to him going to the Tour de France and being almost ready to compete.
After that, I suspected he might buy me a bike.
Instead, the envelope held confirmation information for two nights at a hotel.
Last weekend, I lost myself in the final polishing touches of my book. Meals were delivered to my door. Garrett had even booked a massage.
Best. Gift. Ever.
At 8:52 PM on Saturday night, I celebrated the completion of Society of Legions with Hershey's kisses and a small bottle of wine.
What's your idea of a self-indulgent fantasy weekend getaway just for you?

Friday Favorite: Dr. Seuss Week
Why can't every week be Dr. Seuss Week?
Max's Super Teachers planned an entire week of fun with the kids.
They even had a party.
Guess who arrived in time to GET TO READ Green Eggs and Ham to the class?
Me. That's right. I did!
Reading to kids is one of my favorite things to do.
I still haven't calmed down from the adrenalin rush.
Max helps his grandparents with their chickens, so my clever mom sent green eggs to school for his teachers. Some of their hens actually lay GREEN EGGS.
The Super Teachers showed the kids the green eggs and had them guess if they'd be green inside or not. (Max kind of ruined the surprise on that one. ) Then, each child cracked his or her own egg and added food coloring and they cooked it right there.
The kids had a feast fit for Whoville with bright red strawberries, green eggs and ham, and a goldfish bowl filled with colored Goldfish--complete with a fish net for scooping!
I'm at the Target Dollar Spot so often my ghost will probably haunt it. I had a stash of Seuss stuff just waiting to be used, and Max's Super Teachers gave us the perfect opportunity to gift them. We filled them with buttons, markers, and pads. Each child should have had something representing at least four different books.
The public library of my childhood was a beautiful old building with a stained glass skylight and strong wooden tables. I can still smell its wonderful combination of mustiness and books. A sturdy oak bench lined the edge of the children's section. I knew that area well. It was where I first realized I could read.
Sitting cross-legged on the edge of the rug in front of the collection of Dr. Seuss books, I realized I was reading the words--not reciting them from memory. I flipped the pages back and forth and mixed it up to be sure.
The moment was magical.
Which is why I love Dr. Seuss and think it is appropriate that schools dedicate a day or entire week to the author and his books.
If you're looking for some easy activities and snacks to enjoy with your little Whos with stuff you probably already have at home, check out my mini Seuss roundup of ideas.
The Cat in the Hat
Snack: Fruity Thing One and Thing Two
Activity: Clean room before Mom comes home. (Yeah, like that's going to happen.)
For real activity: Check out the hand print art from above. I'm going to try it with Little Sister and frame my Thing 1 and Thing 2 to put in our Seuss playroom.
Green Eggs and Ham
Snack: The most simple snack is use food coloring to dye a scrambled egg or deviled eggs with a ham sandwich, but a sweeter idea is From Mrs. Lirette's Learning Detectives: Green Pudding and Vanilla Wafer make an "egg"
Activity: Try something new. Anything!
One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish
Snack: Colored goldfish.
Activity: From Oopsey Daisey: Count and sort before eating them. If you want to get fancy, print off these chart.
The Foot Book
Snack: Try a Fruit by the Foot snack from the grocery store.
Activity: From Mom to 2 Posh Lil Divas; Trace or paint your child's feet. Label left and right. Play games like Hokey Pokey and Twister so kiddo can practice left and right.
The Sneetches
Snack: Make sandwiches or cheese slices and cut a star out of the center. Cut up pineapple or cheese in star shapes.
Activity: Also from Oopsey Daisey: Play Musical Chairs but have students stand on stars. Make one a different color. Whoever lands on it, is out. or you can cut out stars and from I Can Teach My Child: Play a variation on Simon Says.
This link has a whole bunch of Seuss Videos to watch.
And, of course, Pinterest has a smorgasbord of ideas for anyone who wants to put in a bit more effort or just peruse the eye candy of all that is Seussical. Click here for a link to Seuss boards on Pinterest.

Mary Engelbreit's Nutcracker
I found it!
I've looked long and hard for a picture book of The Nutcracker that fulfilled the expectations of my childhood imaginings.
Over thirty years ago, my dance teacher and our moms escorted a bunch of little girls to see The Nutcracker ballet in Tulsa. I'd never seen anything so magical. The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy made a lasting impression.
My mother bought me a nutcracker ornament that day. The fur is sparse. The nose is gone. But I still love my nutcracker prince as much as any little girl.
Click here to see a few pages of Mary Engelbreit's beautifully illustrated version of the story. You won't be disappointed.

Writer's Wednesday: Literary Boyfriends
Long before I wanted a real boyfriend, I juggled several from literature. And what's better than a literary boyfriend? A literary love triangle!
No matter who the main character chooses, I always choose one similar to my first love: Rhett Butler from Gone With the Wind. That other guy Ashley Wilkes? Ew! Rhett may have been no "gentleman," but at least he stood up for what he believed and fought for it. My eleven-year-old brain read between the lines and wanted Ashley to stop being such a wimp about life and man up already.
How about you? Who are your favorite literary boyfriends?
To get the conversation started, let's talk about famous young adult titles that are already movies or will be soon.
Twilight by Stephenie Meyer
Edward vs. Jacob
No contest! Edward is just too polished (like cold marble, I know)--and whiny--for my tastes. (Get it? Vampire pun there.) I prefer the warmth and personality of Jacob. He's a fighter.
The Selection by Kiera Cass
Prince Maxon vs. Aspen
This one throws a wrench in the whole bad boy thing. I prefer Maxon over Aspen. Is it because he's a prince? Nope. I think it's because he really wants what is best for her, is willing to stand up to his father for his own beliefs, and doesn't whine about circumstances.
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
Peta vs. Gale
It's always been you, Gale. Always. You're a rebel. A fighter. Peeta...okay, in the book, you are not the wimp the movie makes you. You are your own kind of hero. You know how to use your brain and teach me, I mean Katniss, a thing or two. You save the heroine a few times yourself. Without you, she wouldn't have survived. But, Peeta, I'd rather be friends. Let's have dinner. You bring the bread.
Divergent by Veronica Roth
Four vs. ???
So, there's no love triangle here, but I still wanted to mention my most recent literary boyfriend.
Who is your literary boyfriend? Do you prefer books with love triangles or not?

Friday Favorite: Celebrate Society Shirts
Everyone possesses talent. How one uses it makes all the difference.
When Jennifer Laws was in the hospital with her newborn twins and planning their future parties, her mind wandered to other babies in the world who were not born into such happy circumstances. Recently, she decided to use her party skills to make a difference.
Thanks to Jennifer, children who are in a local emergency shelter on their birthday will get the regulation cake from the kitchen--and they will also get a "party in a bag." It's a kit she created that helps each child, when surrounded by strangers on the anniversary of his or her birth, understand that someone knows their existence is worth celebrating.
I love this idea almost as much as I love Jennifer's heart.
Want to know how to help?
She's funding this endeavor by creating designs that you can buy at her etsy shop.
Print and iron the design yourself or pay a little more for her to create the whole shirt.
What a simple way to celebrate your little ones and help celebrate another child as well!
Any day decals:
birthday party decals:
and check out these adorable Halloween decals--just perfect for a t-shirt or treat bag:
Last month I witnessed the giddiness that is Jennifer on the morning of her sons' birthday party. "I love party day," she said, practically bouncing with joy. "This must be what Lebron James feels like on game day!"
Pretty accurate comparison.

What Should I Read Next?
I fall in love with a book. My body exists in this world while my mind stays in the one created by the author. The book ends, and I sigh in satisfaction.
Then I gasp.
What will I read next?
Inevitably, I pick up several books that would be great under different conditions, but they don't satisfy my craving. Who wants to eat sushi when you're hankering for a s'more?
Know the feeling?
Well, have I got a present for you!
It's a website called What Should I Read Next?
Simply type in a book or author you enjoy and a list of lovely choices will appear.
Most people would say that an extensive database and a computer genius are behind this site.
They're wrong.
When something speaks to my heart and makes me this happy.... I know my fairy godmother made it so.
Don't believe me? Check for yourself.

Magic Monday: Lucky Charm
I completed Lucky Charm, my second young adult novel a year and a half ago. And I couldn't stop tweaking it. Granted, that whole morning sickness and giving birth thing was time consuming, but I wouldn't let go of the manuscript.
Until now.
The cosmos spoke to me.
My novel has two key images--rose rocks and shamrocks.
Yesterday, my family helped my grandmother clean out her garage. Not knowing a thing about my novel, she gave me this:
Afterward, we went to the lake. My son and I were walking along when he said, "Mom! I have to show you something." He claimed he'd seen a roly-poly and pointed at the ground. Right beside his imaginary crustacean was this:
Okay, Universe. I'm listening.
Until now.

Construction Party 3rd Birthday
Thankfully, he stayed this side of healthy and we had a great time!
The weather cooperated as well. It kindly dropped just below 100 degrees so being outside didn't remind us of Old Testament fire and brimstone.
Although I had several other ideas for parties, Max's lullaby request most of the summer was the Bob the Builder theme song. So... since it was his birthday, I rolled up my sleeves and "dug" in. The theme focused on the construction theme rather than the cartoon. However, Max spotted a balloon at the grocery store the day before. Eyes wide and smile big, he told me all about it. Garrett went the next day and bought it. We tied it to a saw horse and placed them in the garden to greet guests.
On Friday, I'll share links to inspiration parties for our construction theme. For now, here are a few shots of my little guy's party:
I can't say enough nice things about Home Depot's generosity. The boys loved the aprons! |
Come on in and grab a work apron and a hard hat. |
Dig in! I loved using his toys as props and was amazed at how many uses caution tape has. |
Gummy worms are big hits with little boys. |
Hard hats are, too. |
They worked and worked! |
Max told us he couldn't eat anything because he had a house to build. |
We enticed him with cupcakes. |
So he enjoyed a meal of...blue icing. |
The sign says, "Dig in" and each work site was staked out.
Armed with sandbox tools, the boys dug and dug to find three (Dollar Store) finds each.
It was so fun to watch them! This idea would also be great for a pirate party and treasure hunt.
I didn't work them the entire time!
They took a few union required breaks...
...lounged around...
...swung in the swings...
...saw the sites...
...continued the team work...
...played with some toys...
...ran with balloons...
...had a mini fight club meeting...
The party was a hit with my little worker. Five months later, he still talks about it.
A happy birthday boy? That's success.
